Some may not care too much for watercolor paintings, some may love them. I have always been a big fan. On Instagram, I stumbled upon a watercolor artist by the name of Ze Ze Lai. Her watercolor paintings are very realistic and absolutely stunning. She mostly paints animals, in particular birds, in dreamlike and mystical scenes. Ze Ze believes birds are dynamic living creatures. “They could be in flocks; have times of solitude; be flying from branch to branch, or sitting still and being observant.” She aims to capture the essence of each little animal rather than a simple study of anatomy. During the days of Covid, I have enjoyed a bit of bird watching myself. They make you reflect while watching them and break up the solitude even when alone.
Ze Ze was born in Hong Kong. Throughout her career, she has worked as a graphic designer, an illustrator, and a publisher. At one time, she was also involved in the medical and educational fields. But, now, she is an advocate for watercolor painting and the arts. She has put tremendous time and effort into the International Watercolor Society—a society with over 90 country branches around the world—since she became a member in 2015. She is currently serving as vice president of the organization. Her work has been widely exhibited all over the world and she has won numerous awards. See more of her work on her website.
